PBS and Bloomberg TV host and author Alexander Heffner discusses his best-selling history anthology A Documentary History of the United States, his "Breaking Bread with Alexander" series featuring twenty-two travelogue documentary interviews with U.S. governors and senators, and the future of American political life. Heffner considers the future of civil discourse and democracy at the start of the second Trump Administration, specifically how divisiveness manifests through digital platforms, disinformation, and filter bubbles. What are possible prescriptions to correct this cycle? How can our social footprint translate into constructive instead of destructive behavior? How can citizens, government, and the press restore faith in civic life and the integrity of public policy?
