Art reception and launch of Patrick McFarlin’s new book, Critical Art Theory which is an inspirational book about painting and creativity, richly illustrated by Patrick.
Five works of art produced during his residency in County Mayo, Ireland in 2005, are on exhibit at Collected Works
McFarlin, born in Arkansas, studied at the Memphis College of Art, University of Arkansas, Little Rock, and the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in the late 1960s. His travels brought him west to New Mexico and California and his talents took him farther, into pop sculpture; “manic- expressionist” painting; landscape; sometimes naive, sometimes neo-Munchean portraiture; surreal narrative. He first exhibited his funky cartoon-style paintings in San Francisco during the late ’60s. Over twenty years ago, SITE Santa Fe presented a portrait exhibition by Patrick McFarlin. Over the course of several months, the Santa Fe community dropped in to the galleries at SITE where Patrick held open studio hours, during which he painted over three-hundred portraits of local people that were exhibited at SITE in 1997.
Patrick is married to chef, food writer and cooking teacher Deborah Madison with whom he co-wrote and illustrated, On Eating Alone: A Reflection, a great quirky book about favorite solo meals and how we indulge ourselves when no one is watching.
