Penguin Random House’s ‘Welcome to the Museum’ gives children access to beautifully illustrated, thoughtfully curated ‘exhibits’ that span the natural world. Each volume is dedicated to a specific natural arena, and this week’s pick, Animalium, is an illustrated collection of over 160 animals! Curated by Katie Scott and Jenny Broom, I can guarantee you and your kids haven’t ever come across a book quite like this.
The chapters are separated by species, and each animal is treated just like an exhibit at a museum. There are illustrated habitats, dioramas and ecosystems, and animals that are closely related are grouped together for simplification. Some exhibits even have skeletal and dissection illustrations too! So cool! Additionally, the animal classes are arranged in evolutionary order, to help explain how the animal kingdom has grown over time.
Animalium includes further scientific material on the habitats of the animals, as well as their ecosystems. It is a clear and valiant attempt to educate the next generation about the interconnectedness of the natural world and the importance of biodiversity.
This is an incomparable book for advanced readers and preteens, brimming with detailed, accurate illustrations and pertinent scientific knowledge.
