Bill Bryson is an eternal sponge, endlessly soaking up the information his inquisitive mind pursues. He is the ‘master explainer’ (thanks Wall Street Journal!), diving into any and all subject matter with a wit and enthusiasm that jumps off the page. The Body, his latest (and freshly released in paperback), is a fine continuation of Bryson’s never-ending exploration and examination.
There are some who dismiss Bryson and similar authors, but this criticism neglects and negates the importance of the reader whose curiosity is piqued by an accessible piece of literature. Bryson isn’t an expert in any of the subjects he writes on, nor does he claim to be one. Rather, he is an avid observer, one who has questions and wants to pursue areas of interest. If you are of a like mind, then Bill Bryson is the best companion one could ask for.
The Body then, is a guided tour through all the parts of the fleshy vessels that makes us human. Bryson’s trustworthy, humorous delivery reveals innumerable, mesmerizing secrets; he is equally adept at dispelling false information as he is delivering wicked puns. Seriously, it is hard to not crack a smile, and release an audible ‘Huh’ at least once every few minutes. That’s not to say that The Body is all warm and fuzzy, Bryson is cautionary when it comes to topics that pose harm to the human body, especially those that we bring upon ourselves.
As a humble champion of literature and education, regard Bryson as a friendly companion, an opener of doors for inquisitive minds.
