Vesper Flights by Helen Macdonald

Vesper Flights by Helen Macdonald

An ode to the natural world, Vesper Flights is a personal, vast, beautiful collection of essays from contemporary naturalist Helen Macdonald.

Too often, we distance ourselves from our natural surroundings. After all, ignorance is bliss, right? While this way of life might work for some, it is not the way Macdonald interacts the world. From a young age, she chose to experience nature as a companion and student rather than an adversary or unknown entity.

The essays that comprise Vesper Flights highlight various intersections of man and nature throughout history. These insightful reflections are inspired by Macdonald’s personal experiences which she uses as jumping-off points for deeper exploration into the complex connection between man and nature.

Vesper Flights is wide-ranging, but this is only the result of Macdonald’s unrequited love of the natural world, and the awe and wonder that it provides her on a daily basis. Macdonald believes in the communicative, educational power of literature, and it is through works like Vesper Flights that we find hope for the future. For Helen Macdonald, education is foundational, but equally so is a sense of wonder and inspiration that has been absent for far too long.
